AbstrAct The Vertical Stabilization system of the JET tokamak has been recently upgraded. This new system enables a more sensitive control of the plasma geometry and can withstand larger perturbations, enabling to push the plasma performance to its limits without risking a severe control loss, which might endanger the machine integrity. The project was successfully delivered in the course of 2009. This paper introduces the new JET Vertical Stabilization design, discussing how its modular architecture enabled the system to provide different experimental features in several operational environments. Furthermore, some of the major achievements of the commissioning activity and of the regular operation during the 2008/2009 experimental campaigns are presented.

LDA Experimental Data of Three-Poster Jet Impingement System
During its near-ground hovering phase a Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) aircraft creates a complex three-dimensional flow field between jet streams, the airframe surface and the ground. A proper understanding and numerical prediction of this flow is important in the design of such aircraft. In this paper an experimental facility, used to gather validation data suitable for testing C...
متن کاملConditions for stabilization of the tokamak plasma vertical instability using only a massless plasma analysis
This paper describes the problem of feedback control for stabilization of the plasma vertical instability in a tokamak. Such controllers are typically designed based on a model that assumes the plasma mass m is identically zero while in reality the mass is small but positive. The assumption that m is zero can lead to a controller that appears to be stabilizing according to the massless analysis...
متن کاملNonlinear stabilization of tokamak microturbulence by fast ions.
Nonlinear electromagnetic stabilization by suprathermal pressure gradients found in specific regimes is shown to be a key factor in reducing tokamak microturbulence, augmenting significantly the thermal pressure electromagnetic stabilization. Based on nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations investigating a set of ion heat transport experiments on the JET tokamak, described by Mantica et al. [Phys. Re...
متن کاملPlasma Vertical Stabilization in the Presence of Coil Voltage Saturation in the DIII-D Tokamak∗
An anti-windup compensator is implemented for a given nominal plasma vertical controller guaranteeing global vertical stabilization of the plasma in the presence of actuactor saturation for all reference commands. The anti-windup synthesis problem is to find a nonlinear modification of the nominal linear controller that prevents vertical instability and undesirable oscillations but leaves the n...
متن کاملPlasma vertical stabilization with actuation constraints in the DIII-D tokamak
In the advanced tokamak (AT) operating mode of the DIII-D tokamak, an integrated multivariable controller takes into account highly coupled influences of plasma equilibrium shape, profile, and stability control. Time-scale separation in the system allows a multi-loop design: the inner loop closed by the nominal vertical controller designed to control a linear exponentially unstable plant and th...
